Rotation Model (Blended Learning)
The Rotation Model is a blended learning approach where students rotate between different types of learning activities, including traditional face-to-face instruction and online learning. This model is significant for it facilitates learning experiences to be personalized, it addresses various styles of learning, and it incites students' behavioral engagement through diversified types of instruction.
There are various rotation models, for example, the Station Rotation, where students rotate among different stations, such as studying online and face-to-face instruction; the Lab Rotation, which entails students rotating into a computer lab for online learning; and the Flipped Classroom, where students are taught new topics using the internet at home and they participate in creative activities in the classroom. Each type gives the students flexibility and tackles various learning requirements.
The Rotation Model is the answer to the problem of student disengagement in class. Since students can choose from a variety of methods, it brings the challenge of overcoming the different types of learning preferences involved in student participation. A great example of this is the mixing of online modules with activities, allowing students to form groups and carry out tasks as they want, where students take part in discussions and presentations on their own, besides working in the group on the project. The child-centred approach employed in this methodology is the core reason that student groups become more interested and constructive and thereby learn more.
Some of the problems teachers could face include the shortage of having technological tools, students not having the same degree of self-discipline, and the difficulty of managing classroom activities during rotations. Furthermore, practitioners have to make sure of planning thoroughly and blending multimedia content with face-to-face sessions in order for students to have a unified lifelong learning experience. Upskilling and support are important factors that could reduce the impact of these issues.
The model of the station rotation is a successful example of a high school that has adopted this model in the math classes. For students, it was a real rotation, first learning with a teacher, then practicing on an online learning platform and then having a collaborative work station.
