Open Educational Resources (OER)
Open Educational Resources (OER) are openly licensed, free-of-charge materials that facilitate teaching, learning, and research. They cover various resources, for instance, textbooks, course materials, and videos, as well as software, and they are instrumental in the promotion of global educational equity and access to education.
One of the advantages of using OER is that it brings about cost benefits for both students and educational institutions, as the resources are mostly provided without any charges. They are also a way of practicing collaboration, sharing and networking among teachers, increase the quality of education by using contemporary materials and be the means of flexible study for students to take their course at their own pace. For instance, a college that would implement an OER textbook in the place of an expensive conventional one would, therefore, be able to decrease the students' expenses by a large amount.
OERs consist of various types of materials such as textbooks, lecture notes, assignments, quizzes, and multimedia resources like videos and simulations. Moreover, OERs can be complete courses or modules that teachers can modify according to their specific teaching environment. A case in point is, a complete online course on computer programming made an OER would be the perfect way to let students access high-quality education for free.
The need for appropriate training and support for teachers so that they can create and integrate these resources into their instruction properly is one of the major challenges that come with the implementation of OER. This could possibly be the case, as the quality and credibility of OER might be left out of the equation in the process of creating and evaluating learning materials, since not all resources are created equally. Moreover, organizations could also encounter the problems of technological barriers in both accessing and distributing OER, especially in areas where there is restricted availability of the internet. It is with a view to minimizing such hurdles that OER can make the best contribution to the education sector.
