Natural Consequences Strategy
Natural Consequences Strategy is a discipline method that enables people to face the outcomes of their actions directly. The strategy places great emphasis on personal responsibility and helps individuals to learn from their mistakes, thus improving their decisions in the future.
Natural consequences are those that occur directly due to the actions of the individual without any external interference from adult or authority figure. If a child does not want to wear a coat on a cold day, the child will feel cold for this reason. It may be understood this way that preparing for extreme weather is important we will not get sick because of it.
This method advances learning through the power of personal observation of the consequences of one's own choices, consequently, it supports the development of the phenomenon of self-exploration, self-knowledge and personal responsibility. For example, a teenager who doesn't do his homework and gets a bad grade learns to make decisions and as a consequence will think learning to be more significant, therefore, he secures it.
The major challenge is making sure safety is guaranteed; there are instances when natural consequences are not safe or suitable for all situations. For instance, even though a kid can learn from getting late to school, it is vitally important for adults to react when such consequences involve a risk of injury or danger. The utmost key of the safety and health of the person is to manage well the natural consequences and the time to do the preventing of them.
This method can be applied by the parents efficiently in a way that they let their children be responsible for and deal with the consequences of their own actions while at the same time create a supportive surrounding for them. For instance., a parent who usually does not take the lunch to their children when it is forgotten at home can instead be the one to keep the lunch at home and have the child face the situation of staying without his lunch at school, thus instilling in him the necessity of concentrating better on running his lunch pack in the future.
