Language Experience Approach
The Language Experience Approach (LEA) refers to a teaching method focusing on the use of experiential and language to fostering literacy skills. LEA creates the environment of expression for students by telling about their thoughts and stories, and in that way, it encourages comprehension and the acquisition of writing and reading skills in real life situations.
The primary principle of the Language Experience Approach is that the language and personal life and the language of learners are used as the basic materials of learning. In this way, the teaching is participatory; students become fully involved in the process of learning, and there is a connection between the forms of speech and written texts. For example, a teacher can ask the pupils to create a narration of their weekend stories, so it is recorded, typed, and used later on as reading material. This helps the children to visualize that there is an immediate relation between their utterance and how a text is written.
The Language Experience Approach embraces diverse learners by recognizing their distinct backgrounds and life events, thereby making the learning process relevant and accessible to them. For instance, students from various cultural or linguistic backgrounds may tell their own stories which not just bring life to the classroom but also create an opportunity for differentiated instruction based on the students' proficiency levels and learning styles.
An example of a Language Experience Approach classroom activity is a cooperative storytelling session when the learners initially talk about a subject like a favorite holiday. The instructor writes down their joint tale which is afterward utilized to make a class book. This not only brings a combination of writing and reading to the students but also allows them to observe their contributions cherished in a practical way.
The Language Experience Approach in literacy instruction has many advantages such as the increased student motivation, the improved language skills, and the development of critical thinking. Since the emphasis is on the individual’s experiences, the students are usually highly interested and willing to participate which results in the acquisition of the actual language structures and the writing process by experiencing the real-life usage of their literacy skills. They can easily relate to the subject matter.
