Interpersonal Communication
Interpersonal communication is the process by which one person conveys his or her thoughts, feelings, and the meaning of the message to another person through the usage of verbal and nonverbal messages. It is a center point of social interactions that by implication of connection, conflict resolution, the process of promoting understanding, is effective.
Interpersonal communication mainly has sender and receiver roles, message content, feedback, context, and noise. For instance, a person communicates an idea a person shares (sender) the other one perceives it (receiver) during the hearing of the sound of the air conditioning (noise) and thus making the connection with the environment (context). The clear understanding of these components is essential for communication to be effective.
Paralinguistic cues, like the posture and facial gestures of a person, the paralinguistic intonation, which is the rate and pitch of their speech, form a big part of, and impact, interpersonal interactions not only by showing affect but also by intention/ direction one can not put into words. For example, a grin in the eyes might be a great supplement to a greeting contact, while opening arms could be a reason for a misunderstanding if someone interprets it under the defensive meaning.
Moving in the same direction, the most active listening skills a person must have are concentration, understanding, responding, and remembering. A very common example of this is a person that while he is conversing to another one, he nods and feeds back the message he received. They are active and engaged, which in turn develops trust and stimulates the dialogue to go further; hence the parties concerned are likely to come to good conclusions on their different issues.
The improvement of interpersonal communication skills is a matter of practicing, becoming aware of oneself, and getting feedback. Various methods like congregating people in a circle to discuss a topic, acting and watching scenarios, and rethinking some previous encounters will boost your ability to articulate your objectives clearly and also to apprehend accurately what others are trying to tell you. Besides, by asking other people to give you some constructive criticism, you will gain some knowledge about what you can work on.
