Integrated Learning Tasks
Integrated Learning Tasks are the projects that combine more than one subject or skills for the better understanding of the concepts. They are very necessary since they stimulate the critical thinking, collaboration, and they havethe capability to explain the knowledge in a real-life setting, hence, they are a great addition to the learning journey of the students.
Integrated Learning Tasks are assignments created to involve students in the integration of knowledge from different subjects to solve complicated issues. For instance, a project which combines both science and art disciplines, having the students create a model of the ecosystem, teaches them biology about the flora and fauna of a particular ecosystem, and at the same time, it also develops their creativity and collaboration skills.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are the main objectives of the students through these tasks as they demand learners to combine data from different fields. Furthermore, they develop collaboration, since students mostly operate in pairs, learning to express themselves well and value different points of view, which are important skills in the present labor market.
A community service project could be an Integrated Learning Task wherein the students study about environmental issues, create a campaign to, and design promotional materials. Chemistry, history, and communication skills are integrated in this way, which helps students apply their knowledge to a real-life context and benefit the community as well.
Curriculum developers and teachers can face difficulties like nonintegrated curriculum standards across subjects, the presence of diverse learners and project funding problems as well. At the same time, measuring student learning in linked tasks might be more complicated than traditional individual assessments so that teachers have to work out explicit and understandable marking schemes.
