Chunking Information
Chunking information is a cognitive strategy wherein one disaggregates intricate data into smaller”manageable units or chunks” readies as a means to improve the memory and understanding of the subject matter. This method is not only efficient for students to learn but also for anyone who processes information because it permits the user to organize and remember the data in a more effective way, thus, making it less strenuous to grasp and apply.
Chunking information is mainly implemented for the enhancement of memory retention and promoting understanding. The division of related material into smaller chunks allows students to be able to process it and make it more self-archivable. For instance, learning a series of numbers such as a phone number request chunking it (e.g., 123-456-7890) instead of memorizing it as one long number.
Chunking information reduces cognitive load and learning is facilitated by focusing Cognitive brain on understanding instead of memorizing long details. This method improves the working memory space that is usually occupied by about seven items. For example, while studying a subject like history, the students can divide the events into either times or themes, thus making the connections easier to remember.
Chunking is one of the ways to remember items on a list. Like in a grocery list, you can classify the items by trying to remember them by their categories instead of associating them individually. For instance, 'dairy (milk, eggs), bakery (bread), produce (apples), meat (chicken)' is one of the categorized portions of the grocery list. This technique is good for making recall easier and makes it less likely to skip items in the shopping list.
The identification mnemonic techniques and recursively organizing the data are the two effective techniques for chunking information that I can think of. For instance, when learning a foreign language, a person can use acronyms for remembering the vocabulary sets(like 'FANBOYS' for coordinating conjunctions in English). In addition, the visual aids in the form of the mind map that help to divide the whole information into chunks then make it easier to comprehend or digest it.
